I discovered today how to remove watermarks from images such as istock photos e.g. click here. I used PhotoShop, a photo editing program. This is a tutorial of how to remove the watermark from the likes of the image previously linked to.
NOTE: This tutorial is for educational purposes only and I am against ripping.
Step one:
Open image in Photoshop:
(I am using an image from Mission Metallica for this example.)

Step two:
Zoom in on watermark:
Step three:
Create a new layer; press Shift+Ctrl+N
Step four:
In the layers panel change the new layer’s type from Normal to Overlay.
Step five:
Select the paintbrush tool and change the primary colour to the opposite colour of the main colour of the watermark, in my case, the watermark is white, so my primary colour will be black.
Step six:
Colour in the area of the watermark that you have chosen the opposite colour of. This is tricky, and may take some time.
Trust me, with time, it will work. Also, if you have another colour, do the same thing, find the opposite colour and colour it in!
Sorry if this tutorial was rubbish, it is my first!

EDIT: I have now finished an image. Here is the before and after:
The picture in the middle is grey because it was Johnny Cash giving the finger, and I didn’t want to offend anyone

nice tut
I think there’s something missing in this tutorial… it doesn’t work, especially with transparent watermarks. if the background is white and the watermark is light blue, the opposite of light blue is a sort of brown colour, even if the new layer set in overlay mode.
